The Glazed Look: approaching oils like the old masters

May 21 - June 18, 2025 (Skip May 28)

Wednesdays, 4 weeks, 6:00-8:30pm

Instructor: Maryn Blanco

There’s something different about paintings in previous centuries… they appear to glow. This 4 week class will take you through the process of the glazing technique used by artists for centuries. In the first week, we’ll make a monochromatic painting of the model, and with each additional week we will explore the colors we see, adding thin layers to develop complexity and depth. By the end of the painting, the highlights will appear to float on top of the painting with deep, rich shadows to support.

This course is for you if you love the look of the old masters, if you prefer to take a slower approach to art, or if you’re looking to learn new techniques to develop your style as an artist.

Age 18+ (This class is best suited for artists with intermediate drawing experience. The focus will be on using oil paint to capture a likeness using light and color. Portrait drawing will not be covered.) The models for this course will be clothed and wear the same thing for each session.
