Oil Painting: Constructed and Organic

April 29 - June 3, 2025

6 weeks, Tuesdays, 1:00 pm-3:30pm

Instructor: Michael Faris

In our postmodern world we have all sorts of factory-made items, they are full of straight lines and perfect circles. Exteriors are wild, organic spaces, with slow curves and organized chaos. Painting objects in these two types, constructed and organic, can be an exercise in disparity. The clean, exact lines and smooth textures of the constructed will often not work with the unruly entities that we find in nature. And the curvy lines and rough textures of the outside will often not work with objects that are man made. The goal in this class is to learn to depict articles in each of these very different environments.

This studio class is designed for students interested in oil painting. Demonstrations and critiques will be used to explain techniques and composition. Each session will include a painting assignment. Students can paint the assigned objects or their own choices of man made and natural objects.
