Introduction to Collagraph Printmaking
February 25 - April 8 (Skip March 18), 2025
6 weeks, Tuesdays, 10am-12:30PM
Instructor: Marcia Pandolfi
We will explore the intaglio process by making collagraph prints. This process includes building up of the surface of the plate, as well as carving into it to create texture. Collagraph is a form of Intaglio printing, where the printmaker builds up a surface on a plate then inks it up. Next, the printmaker uses either phonebook pages or tarlatan cheesecloth to wipe the excess ink off the plate. It takes several minutes to wipe the ink off until smooth surfaces are fairly clean and ink has settled into crevices and textured areas.
This class is open to beginners and pros alike, with an emphasis on expressive mark making, and exploring the myriad ways of adding texture to a surface. On the last day, we’ll have an informal critique, where each student will have an opportunity to show and discuss their work.
