Exploring Composition Through Drawing

September 24- October 29, 2024

6 Weeks, Tuesdays, 10AM-12:30PM

Instructor: Michael Faris

Composition is the way subject matter is arranged in an artwork. There are many questions that might be answered by artists when they are making decisions about composition. What are the various strategies for creating a successful composition? How do artists decide which objects go in certain places in a composition? What are the various ways to create realistic space? What are the differences between foreground, middle ground, and background areas? How are detail, color, and value affected by placement in a composition? How is gradation related to composition? These and other questions will be explored in this class.

This studio class is designed for students who have some experience in drawing. Emphasis will be on creating successful compositions. Demonstrations and critiques will be used to explain techniques and composition. Each session will include a drawing assignment.
