This series is geared towards teens and adults, interested in learning more about different printmaking processes.
Some months may have an interactive element, while others will be purely a demonstration/show&tell.
On December 21st (the 3rd Sat. Of Dec.), from 9:30-10:30am, Cullen Curtis will talk about his work, and show off some prints! Cullen is a printmaker and sculptural painter from St. Louis exploring the dueling forces of construction vs destruction. Cullen's prints depict allegorical scenes about labor and his experiences of navigating ADHD and masculinity, as well as isolated objects emblematic of these themes floating on white backgrounds. He primarily utilizes relief printmaking, which before the days of digital printing was itself a trade job, and in this way the process adds another layer of meaning to the final piece. Come take a peek at some prints, and learn about his process.
On January 18th (the 3rd Sat. Of Jan.), from 9:30-10:30am, Brian Lathan will introduce narrative and figurative world building through the exploration and discussion of his prints. Utilizing brightly colored screenprints, Brian’s artwork lures the viewer into an altered world that challenges our perception of reality and the stories we’ve been taught. Join us as Brian discusses his artwork, introduces his process and demos how he uses photoshop to plan his screenprints.
On February 15 (the 3rd Sat. Of Feb.), from 9:30-10:30am, Sophia Malone of Melon Press, an independent Riso press and publisher, will talk about Risographs! Risograph can be described as an automatic screenprinting as it uses built up layers of ink using a limited color palette, but can print up to 100 copies a minute. Riso is an eco-friendly and efficient alternative to laser printing and screen printing and often used for zines and small press. Come learn about this unique printing method, how the machine works, and what qualities are characteristic of Risograph prints. Sophia will share about her personal work which includes creating collages from found images that are all printed in Risograph.
On March 15 (the 3rd Sat. Of March.), from 9:30-10:30am, Samantha Mendoza will talk about reduction relief printing! Samantha will bring in some of her work to show and discuss. Next, we will learn about pin registration and practice it by printing the final layer of a reduction print, together! Samantha’s work explores themes of love, loss, and human fallibility. Drawing from introspective investigation and all modes of storytelling, she creates narratives that balance personal and universal experiences. Her literary inspiration helps to integrate Dark Romanticism’s focus on human emotion and Magic Realism’s interweaving of the fantastical and mundane.
On April 19th (the 3rd Sat. Of April), from 9:30-10:30am, Nicci Arnold will talk about the role of personal narrative and art historical references in her work while sharing a selection of prints. Learn about her unconventional path balancing motherhood and art school and the support she’s found in printmaking communities along the way. Get a peek inside the process as she pulls a relief print by hand with a wooden spoon and some good ol’ elbow grease!
